The Curious Feeling of Falling
– by LC (Makoto/Haru)

Only Haru will ever remember this.

He’s running up a slope to catch the train back home. The canvas under his arm slows him down, though he makes it just in time for the doors to close.

From the window, he sees rain starting to pelt down. He walks over to a seat, though he’s not paying attention to where he’s going. He’s staring at everything outside, the rain, and the lights from the city.

He stands still, realizing that there are no more vacant seats and that he has to stand up for the whole trip.

“Nice weather today, ne?” comes a voice, and he turns to see a tall man wearing big circle glasses looking out the window, just as Haru was a few moments ago.

Haru nods. “Yeah,” he says, before he looks away.

For the rest of the trip, they stand side-by-side, in silence and in awe of the rain. They get off at the same stop, and Haru loses him among a small crowd of people.

This is how they first met, though it’s not how everything starts.

– by Eve (Makoto/Rin)

“Makoto?”

The Orca turned to find Rin standing a few feet away.

“What are you doing out here?” Rin asked.

“I was just out for a jog and I had to stop and enjoy the view,” Makoto replied looking back up at the sky. Rin followed Makoto’s gaze.

“It is beautiful, isn’t it?”

Rin sat down next to Makoto. How long had it been since the two of them sat down and had a simple conversation? Ever since Rin had come back from Australia he had been mostly paying attention to Haruka.

“I’m surprised you’re out here on this day,” Rin said quietly staring out at the ocean.

Makoto was unsure what Rin was talking about until he saw the pain in Rin’s eyes. His heart dropped as he remembered that night of the storm when they were little. Makoto had a hard time coping with his losses that night, he could only imagine how hard it was for Rin.

Winter Warmth
– by Umiyuki (Makoto/Haru)

“It’s really pretty, isn’t it,” he says, pausing a moment to look up at the falling snow.

“Yeah,” says Haru beside him, and Makoto glances over to see Haru watching the snow with a peaceful smile on his face. In spite of the cold weather, Makoto feels a warm sensation spreading through his chest at seeing Haru looking happy. He turns his gaze back to the night sky, and the two of them stand and watch the snow fall for another minute before Haru speaks again. “Makoto?”

“Hmm?” Makoto looks over and sees that Haru’s eyes filled with sincerity, in that way he has that always makes Makoto’s heart skip a beat.

“Thanks,” says Haru. “For inviting me out today, I mean. It was fun.”

The warm feeling in Makoto’s chest spreads to the rest of him, and he can’t keep himself from smiling. It’s still so wonderful to hear Haru expressing his feelings this way; this time last year he’d never have imagined that he’d hear Haru thanking him so openly for a gesture as small as spending a day together. It only goes to show how much he’s grown - how much they’ve both grown, really - since starting the swimming club with Nagisa. This time last year, Makoto might have said something like “You don’t have to thank me,” but he understands better now how much it really matters to them both for Haru to express things aloud, even if Makoto would know them without Haru saying them.

Occupational Hazard of Dating A Matsuoka
– by isumiilde (Makoto/Rin, Kou/Seijuuro)

In retrospect, Makoto shouldn’t have responded positively when Rin suggested the double date. But then again, refusing Rin has proven to be a very challenging deed, considering there are kisses and teasing touches to distract him from remembering common sense.

“And you think this would be a good idea,” Mikoshiba whispers in accusation when they meet up on the bus stop. He shows up in a sleeveless tight shirt that accentuates the lines of his abs and hips neatly, with a color that matches Gou’s summer dress, which means it’s probably Gou’s idea. The two of them standing side by side is the very definition of a stylish, good-looking couple, attracting the eyes of every single living being that passes by. It’s probably why the girl who just passed them trips on her own feet and lands face first on the ground.

Makoto, on the other hand, shows up in his school uniform because he just got off from the prefectural swim teams captain meeting. Rin doesn’t say anything about it, but Makoto did catch him rolling his eyes at Mikoshiba and Gou’s appearance. Gou’s smile looks very smug.

Makoto throws Mikoshiba an apologetic look above Gou’s head, and tells himself to be more positive.

After all what’s the worst that could happen in an aquarium, right?

Kalverliefde – by Ashleen (Makoto/Haru)

“Haru-chan…” Makoto started, giving his friend a supporting smile, “We will still talk once we get to into college, you know that I won’t forge–”

“You don’t know that.” Haruka interrupted, his calm facade finally slipping as he gave Makoto a look of despair that made Makoto’s heart clenched at the site, “You don’t know if we will keep in contact.”

“I will try my hardest to do it.” Makoto insisted as his voice raised in levels to get the point across, “I promise I will write to you and–”

“I’ll go to the same college as you.” Haruka said. It wasn’t a terrible idea, but Makoto felt that it will be his fault if Haruka does not enjoy his college experience. Makoto did not want that to happen, but he also didn’t want to be selfish. That serious look in Haruka’s eye made Makoto’s heart sweep up with pride and thankfulness to have such a friend.

my heart tied in a knot, and my stomach in a whirl – by Bonnie (Makoto/Rei)

“I received a Valentine’s day card,” Rei says seriously. “And I need to know who sent it.”

“Whaat, Rei-chan got a card?” Nagisa asks. Rei hands the card to him, now that Nagisa is no longer lunging for it. He doesn’t want this beautiful card to get damaged.

Haruka shrugs, glancing at it briefly, before going back to his lunch. It’s not mackerel today which Rei is very glad about. He doesn’t want his card to smell like fish.

“Can I see it, Rei?” Makoto says.

Rei goes quiet briefly, because all he wants is for it be from Makoto, but--then Nagisa is handing Makoto the card and he doesn’t have to answer.

“You make my heart flutter, valentine!” Makoto reads from the card. “Wow, Rei! This person must really like you!”

Interlace – by seinakyou (Makoto/Haru)

Makoto has always been around, and though he’s been hurt by Haru before – times it still hurts Haru to think about – Makoto always comes back with a smile and friendship. So Makoto is safe, and Makoto is real, and Makoto is really the only person that Haru can rely on anymore.

When they went into the eighth grade and Haru still hadn’t started swimming again, Makoto didn’t say anything. That’s what he likes about Makoto, Haru decides. He doesn’t make anyone do anything they don’t want to.

Haru sighs and sinks below the water of the tub. There are too many thoughts circling through his head right now, and he really just wants to go swimming. Not racing – just swimming. Just floating in the water, diving under and above when he wants to and not when he’s supposed to.

He’s so absorbed in his thoughts that he doesn’t hear the door to the bathroom open, he doesn’t hear Makoto say: “Haru, we’re going to be late unless you-” and he certainly does not expect to feel hands on his, hauling him out of the water and see a frightened, soaked Makoto standing next to the tub as Haru sputters and tries to regain his breath.

Language Arts – by CaffeineKitty (Haru/Makoto/Rin)

Rin looked pained as he watched the exchange. "And you two think that sucking at English is the worst of your problems?"

Makoto rubbed the back of his neck and offered an apologetic little laugh. "A-ah, well…"

"Shit, teaching Nagisa wasn’t as annoying as dealing with you two…" The redhead folded his arms across his chest. "At least he wanted to learn."

"We want to learn." Makoto nodded enthusiastically, gripping Haruka’s wrist just out of Rin’s line of sight under the table to keep him from going for the carving tools again. "Really."

"I don’t need it," Haruka said. "Water doesn’t speak English."

When both Rin and Makoto stared at him with matching ‘not sure if actually serious’ expressions, the corners of Haruka’s mouth twitched, just a little.

if i were the ocean, would you be the sky? – by mydarlingnever (Makoto/Haru)

Makoto kisses him. He kisses his nose and kisses his cheeks and kisses his mouth, again and again.

And then he starts to fade.

It’s in sheer white, sparkling white, blinding white. In the scales of a dragon, the petals of a flower he bursts, into nothing but shimmers in the last white-gold drops of sunlight.

Haru stands, with drummer boys in his chest and fairies in his feet, and calls out the window, “Goodbye, Makoto.”

A breeze ruffles his hair, right then. It touches his face, holds it gently, and dries the tears Haru didn’t even know were there. It smells like salt and brine and, so quietly he might have imagined it, he can almost hear,

“Goodbye, Haru.”

Green Waters – by Halcyon (Makoto/Haru)

It had always bothered Haruka that the beauty people found in water was in the fleetingly perfect moments that never quite captured the full scope of its beauty. People tended to find loveliness only in a river’s crystalline reflections of indigo skies, or the movement of a grey-silk sea in the throes of a storm. They loved white-walled waterfalls and puddles on concrete after a rainstorm. Haruka adored these things as well, but none of them quite matched how deeply he loved the dark, encompassing vastness of the sea, a place of being he loved with a sense of knowing he felt in the depth of his heart.

He loved the cerulean world that deepened in color, pressure, and comfort the further down one went. He could never quite understand why people found its silence so lonely. Perhaps he had been in the deep for too long to truly understand what life above the surface felt like, but Haruka had always felt perfectly fine being by himself. It was not necessarily something he chose, but after experiencing it for so long it had simply felt like a natural state. He had always reasoned that one did not necessarily need others to feel whole. For most of his childhood, he had been content not to see beauty and brilliance in others, but rather in the place he felt safest. People were nice to have in one’s life, sure, and he certainly loved his grandmother dearly, but he found the isolation water provided more invigorating than any one person.

That was, of course, until Makoto.

His Voice – by Red_Shiloh (Makoto/Rei)

Rei’s always loved the deep tones of Mako’s voice. It’s the kind of voice that travels and commands attention without Mako ever having to shout (which is good because Mako never shouts). When they’re curled up on the couch together and Rei’s lying with his ear pressed against Mako’s chest, lulled into a half sleep from the steady thud of Mako’s heartbeat, Mako will laugh or make some comment about whatever they happen to be watching on TV and Rei can feel it reverberating deep inside, travelling through his own body and down to his toes. It can be in equal measures comforting and impressive, and on the rare (very rare) occasions that Mako is angry, it can be very, very intimidating.

One thing Rei never counted on, was just how damn sexy Mako’s voice can be when he’s whispering filthy strings of nothings into his ear. Rei never knew before, but Makoto can have a filthy mouth. He only ever uses it when they’re together, alone and naked, Rei twisting and aching under the sheets while Mako presses a trail of kisses down his body, worshipping every inch of him as he lets Rei know just what he plans on doing to him in explicit detail.

blessings in and of days counting – by Kaoru (Makoto/Haru)

Two days before their third year begins, Makoto asks if he’s free to go out for a couple of hours to see the cherry blossoms, while they’re still in full bloom and before school crunches in on them.  Third year means more than necessary hard work, less than liked free time, and there’s no way they’re letting this sort of opportunity slip by their fingers.

“Haru, the weather finally let up!  Please tell me you’re free this afternoon.”

“I am, but—”

“Great!  I’ll be over in about ten minutes.  Don’t stay in the bathtub too long again, we have to save the best seat!  I’ll tell Nagisa to call Rei for us.”

And like that, Makoto hangs up; not giving him another chance to change his answer.
What is this, a double date?

The first thing you say is the most honest thing, Haruka remembers Makoto telling him in passing—not directly for him—but he’s pretty sure it’s still meant to imply something about him anyway; Makoto has that way of saying things.

Feels Like Home – by Risotto (Makoto/Rin)

“Makoto,” Rin begins warily, because he’s not sure where he is and uncertainty makes him paranoid. His eyes are covered and he’s being led up a flight of creaky steps in a stairwell so narrow, their elbows are bumping into the walls. “I know I mentioned to you once or twice about wanting to use blindfolds, but I don’t think it was in this sort of context.”

His tone is suggestive and he can hear the heat rushing up to his boyfriend’s face. “Rin.”

They make it to the top of the flight when Makoto squeezes his elbow just so and tells him, “Watch your step.”

“Very funny,” Rin snorts. They make it without any trips, walk a few meters, and then there’s the drone of a door opening before a cool and empty draft hits them.

“Okay, take it off,” Makoto says then immediately regrets it when Rin’s sharp teeth are bared in a wide grin. “The blindfold, Rin. The blindfold.”

Rin’s subsequent snickering dies in an instant once the offending cloth is lifted from over his eyes. They’re standing in the middle of an unfurnished apartment. Coincidentally, it’s one of the ugliest places Rin has ever seen.

“So?” Makoto moves beyond the genkan to stand in the middle of it with his arms held out, and with his broad shoulders and long limbs, the apartment manages to somehow look even smaller. “What do you think?”

“What the hell is this?” Rin, meanwhile, is looking at the unfamiliar space like he’s unsure if he should make his escape by leaping out of the nearest window or bolting down the stairs.

“It’s our new place!”

At the very least, we can date the pizza – by Pip (Seijuurou/Makoto)

“What’s going on with you, Mako? Did you have cancelled plans tonight?” Grinning playfully, Seijuurou folds his pizza in half from the crust down and bites off the end. Makoto shakes his head, shredding a napkin on his lap beneath the table.

“No, I wanted to talk to you about something. Gou-chan was asking me about you, today.” Makoto balls the napkin up in his lap, neck heating up with his embarrassment as he moves his hands to the tabletop. Seijuurou doesn’t immediately launch into ‘Gou-talk’ at the mention of her name, like he used to back when they first started meeting up for pizza. Instead, he cocks an eyebrow and swallows.

“What for? Everything okay?” Seijuurou sets his pizza back onto his plate and leans forward, elbows propped on the table. Makoto clears his throat and shakes his head again, leaning forward without thinking.

“No.” His voice softens but his eyes flicker around the edge of the pizza pan, unable to meet Seijuurou’s eyes. “She wanted to know if we were dating. She also offered her support.” Makoto swallows air, then leans back to take a sip of water for his rapidly drying throat. Seijuurou stares at him unabashedly, mouth open on words that won’t quite come forward. When he sits up, back ramrod straight, Makoto mimics him out of anxiety.

“What did you tell her?” Seijuurou’s face looks warm when Makoto glances at it, and it spurs his own embarrassment.
