This is the sixth annual event celebrating our favorite Iwatobi backstroker, former captain, & current coach. :D

Details: In Tokyo, Makoto is seduced by Kisumi while everyone else thinks he and Haru belong together. Kisumi has a bad reputation when it comes to relationships and everyone is against his romantic involvement with Makoto, but Makoto sees something in him the others can't.
Notes: About MakoHaru in this, it's up to you whether they are friends or have been something more, I just wanted to clarify that in the prompt them being suitable for each other is what everyone else thinks should happen or has assumed that is happening, given how close they are. Details: AU where Rin is an emperor, rumoured incapable of having his own children, who despite being very overprotective towards his sister Gou, has no option but to wed her with a man of imperial/noble line so his House will have an heir. Makoto, coming from a high-ranked branch of the same Imperial family and generally a tame and loyal to the Empire young man looks like the perfect candidate in Rin's eyes. However there are two problems the fiery redhead isn't aware of: A) His sister is already in love with the head of the palace guard, Sousuke, who grew up inside the palace but his parents were commoners, thus he is unsuitable for a suitor and B) Makoto himself has been secretly in love with Rin for years. With Rin in total oblivion seeking to expedite the wedding as there are rumours of an imminent war with rebelling countries, Makoto has to find a solution that will lead both Gou and himself to happiness, without distabilizing the Empire. Something that isn't easy though since being openly homosexual is frowned upon and causing a scandal within the Imperial family can be punishable by law, despite the fact that Rin's impotence is a lie to avoid a marriage and cover his own homosexuality.
Notes: If instead of an Empire, you prefer the story set in a Kingdom, a Sultanate etc. that's fine too. Details: Fast forward to the future, Kisumi and Makoto meet again in the event of Ran's engagement to Hayato. Their meeting will ignite old flames from the time they secretly shared a few nights together, but will also bring to the surface their different views on their siblings' relationship: Kisumi's POV, whose ulterior motive was to see Makoto again and was always supportive of his brother dating Ran, and Makoto's POV, who feels uncomfortable with this development and is worried that rekindling their old fling will only complicate things for their siblings' new life.
Notes: I don't mind Ren showing up as well, however the one in relationship with Hayato must be Ran, as I enjoy her personality more. Details: Sousuke visits Kisumi in Tokyo and Gou finds the perfect chance to tag along for some shopping etc. in the capital. Kisumi insists on surprising Makoto and Haru who both live nearby, so in the evening all three end up at Makoto's place. It's getting late, alcohol is involved, Haruka leaves cause he has to wake up early for training, Kisumi is a little bit too frisky around Makoto, Sousuke has always been jealous of that awesome Tachibana back, Gou can't believe her luck all these muscles around and Rin miles away, they all 4 end up a tangle of limbs. Extra kudos 1 (comedy): Haruka wakes up the next morning and for the first time in all his years, Makoto hasn't come to pick him up. So he goes to his place to wake him up instead and hilarity ensues when Makoto who has a hangover must find all kinds of excuses for what the hell happened last night and why everyone's semi naked. Extra kudos 2 (drama): They wake up the next morning and have to deal with the consequences of their actions. Especially when they learn that Rin might be landing at Tokyo at noun.

Details: Arabian AU, where Sousuke is an official of Sultan Rin’s military and is assigned a mission to track down a band of thieves. The mission takes him out into the desert, where his men turn on him. (Maybe his second in command was hoping to get his job, maybe they just did it because they didn’t like him, the reason is up to you.) He’s left to die in the desert, badly wounded and completely stripped of materials. By some stroke of luck, (or, more accurately, a stroke of irony,) one of the thieves that Sousuke was tracking ends up rescuing him - Makoto. Sousuke’s nursed back to health under Makoto’s care, and the two fall in love.
Notes: Please no non-con, a/b/o, daddy kink, seme/uke dynamics, or mpreg. NSFW isn’t necessary, but if you’d like to, by all means! I’m not picky about bed roles, but top!Makoto is always a rare gem with this ship. Makoto moves back to Iwatobi shortly after Gou finishes up school. The two spend a lot of time together, and both gradually come to realize that they have romantic feelings for each other. How they get together (and IF they get together,) is up to you. Bonus points for awkward attempts at flirting and Gou with short hair!

I like an element of friction in my MakoRin, whether it be through differences in personalities or goals or whatever, just something to give them a little substance and weight outside their usual balance. I'd like to see some danger or a force working against them that has them thinking on their feet, being resourceful, and lending a sense of urgency to the story. Looking for a more serious tone than a slapstick silly tone but it doesn't need to be direly life or death either. Character-driven story. Their thoughts, feelings, motivations are all important. Details: Post-Canon or Future Fish preferred, any other real-world grounded AU is also fine. Mostly an open prompt with the caveat that I’m admittedly picky about MH representation and what I don’t want. I'm specifically looking for heavy emphasis on their relationship/character growth as adult-adults (like, 25+ at least) navigating Realistic Life Obstacles with a nice balance of human-centric feelings such as sarcasm, drama, frustration, and contentment. Basically demonstrate the status of their relationship while being allowed to simultaneously live their own lives. This can be shown through a warm reunion, hardship, trial, a rallying life event, a slow progression over a long period of time, etc. I encourage being creative with it, I like to see other takes than the standard Tokyo checklist on the relationship. Set them apart physically, make them fight, allow them to disagree, have them discover something brand new together, happily FWB, etc.
Notes: Preferred sub-genres: introspection, drama, dramedy, angst, hurt/comfort. If you think you know the basics of my characterization preferences, romo MakoHaru is totally fine and encouraged. Makoto wants to stay up late to study (Whatever he's studying) and Rin just wants some damn peace and quiet so he can sleep. Rin and Makoto have perhaps had hidden feelings for a while. (Perhaps the roommate and their partner want to get a lil' funky. A bonus if Makoto and Rin are room neighbours.) (Kinda like an "I want to tell you I like you but my roommate is banging and its making it a little hard for me." Quite literally.)

Details: Makoto's pet cat somehow manages to escape and become lost during the night. Makoto can't sleep and instead bravely (though terrified) goes out at three am to find it. Queue a drunken Sousuke out on the street on his way home (Or wherever you please) petting said cat. (They're about early twenties here?) Makoto manages to find his cat, after hearing Sousuke speaking/mumbling/trying to start an argument with it. Makoto, upon confrontation, realises that this is the guy from his old school's rival swim team. After some hard persuasion and usage of the majority of his strength, Makoto returns home with his cat, and an almost passed out Sousuke. What happens during the night / the following morning is down to you! (Bonus points if the cat becomes attached to Sousuke)

Party Favors is a bonus round for extra gifts. Anyone can do a Party Favors fill. :D

To be clear, there are two types of fills for the Makoto Birthday Exchange:

Assignment Fill = Required of participants, open only to signed-up participants
Party Favors (Extra) Fill = Optional, open to literally everyone

No sign-up or claiming is required for Party Favors. Everyone is welcome to do a Party Favors fill, whether or not you signed up as an original participant. (You don’t get anything out of doing Party Favors except the joy of making someone happy.)

Party Favor fills have no word count or pixel minimums. They’re just meant to be an extra little treat for the recipient (and a way to do a fill for a prompt you might be in love with but didn’t get assigned, or something for a friend or someone you admire, or for whatever reason you choose). :D

The past two years, we’ve run Party Favors as a bonus round at the end of the exchange. This year, we're running it simultaneously with the main round, with a later deadline than the main round (the day after Makoto's birthday).

What is a pinch hitter?
When a participant drops out for whatever reason, a pinch hitter is someone who steps up and accepts the assignment in their place (sometimes on very short notice). Pinch hitters are absolutely essential to the success of any exchange.

How does pinch hitting work?
Unlike regular assignments, pinch hits are not automatically assigned. Whenever one comes up, it goes out for claiming to all potential pinch hitters on a mailing list. If you’re interested in taking the assignment, you reply to the email. If you're not interested, you don't have to do anything. Pinch hits are assigned on a first come, first served basis.

Do I have to be a participant in the exchange in order to be a pinch hitter?
Definitely not! We'll take anyone who's interested.

So then, how can I join the pinch hitter mailing list?
Leave a comment here with your name and a reliable email address you check regularly. Comments are screened and your email will be kept confidential.

Details: AU where Makoto transfers to Sousuke's Tokyo swimming school in his first year of high school, and becomes friends with Sousuke, eventually playing a part in making sure Sousuke doesn't push himself too hard with his training. This changes several things: Sousuke doesn't break his shoulder, and Makoto undergoes the kind of rigid training that swimmers aiming to compete internationally do, which eventually factors in his decision about the future. Makoto goes back to Iwatobi for his second year and he and Sousuke keep in touch. Sousuke does get scouted in his second year, and enrolls in Samezuka to swim with Rin on his third year. They (Makoto and Sousuke) face off again in the third year relay. Makoto and Haru remain best friends, and Sousuke's dream is still to swim beside Rin on the big stage. Basically nothing changes in Free! except for that one temporary transfer.
Notes: Can be gen if you want, but if you're writing this in a shippy context, I'd like lots of H/C, hugs and shoulder kisses. Smut is optional. If you want to continue writing until their future timeline, Makoto doesn't necessarily have to go pro, but he does keep competing at least on a collegiate level. Sousuke, however, MUST go pro.

Party Favors 2015 is open October 1 - December 1.

Everyone is welcome to do a Party Favors fill, whether or not you signed up as an original participant. (You don’t get anything out of it except the joy of making someone happy.)

There is no claiming. If you want to do a fill for a request, go right ahead!
Fills should follow the same Guidelines as those for regular assignments, with one exception:
- There is no minimum requirement for Party Favor fills.

Works for the 2015 Tachibana Makoto Birthday Fanworks Exchange are now live on AO3.

We’re also pleased to announce the 2015 Makoto Birthday Exchange Commenting Contest on AO3! Our goal is to encourage the expression of appreciation for all the wonderful art, fic, and comics done for the exchange this year.

The contest runs from now until December 1, 2015 and is open to everyone, whether or not you contributed a fanwork.

Here’s how it works:

Only comments on AO3 will be counted.
You do not need an AO3 account to particpate. If you don’t have an AO3 account, please use the same name on all your comments.
Prizes (TBA -- may include merchandise/gift cards/commissioned fic or art) will be given to the top commenters. Each quality comment will earn one point.
By “quality comment,” we mean something that indicates you’ve actually read the work or taken some time to appreciate it. (Length of the comment is not important -- we’re just looking for something more than “nice job” or “I liked this.” For example, you could mention a specific part you especially liked, something about the artist/author’s style, an emotional or intellectual response you had, etc.)

To participate:

Keep track of which works you leave a comment on.
By December 2nd, send us your name (either your AO3 username or the name you used on your comments) along with a list of the works you commented on. [email: sallynotsally @ gmail.com]

We’ll count up the totals and contact winners by December 10th. Once we’ve confirmed the winners, we’ll post an announcement.

Even if you choose not to participate in the contest, we hope you’ll check out the collection when you have a chance. With 46 works covering a wide range of characters, relationships, categories, genres, and ratings, there’s sure to be something for everyone who loves Makoto! :D

The extension deadline has passed, and we’re super happy to say that no new pinch hits are needed. Way to go, everyone! :D

There is one pinch hit being worked on. We’re all cheering you on, anonymous (for now) pinch hitter!

For everyone who finished and posted an assignment, we’re now in the grace period before works go live. This will happen as soon as possible on Makoto’s birthday. Our ideal would be to go live at midnight on the 17th, Japan time (midnight is the start of the day).

You may use the time between now and then to make any edits you want to your work, to get it exactly how you want it for your recipient.

You also might consider doing something for Party Favors, the bonus round for extra gifts. Party Favors fills are open to everyone, regardless of whether you signed up as an original participant or not.

The extension deadline for the Makoto Birthday Exchange is end of day today, November 7th. That gives you 13 hours from the time of this post.

Remember that your work does not have to be perfect by the deadline, just complete (you will be able to edit/polish during the grace period as we get ready to go live for Makoto’s birthday).
